Why therapy?
Sage believes that nearly all of us can benefit from psychotherapy at some point during our adult lives. Perhaps we need a little help with a specific problem, a period of grief and loss, or a major transition. Maybe we are feeling low, worn out, overwhelmed. We might know we need change but we aren’t quite sure how to get there. Many of us will struggle with an episode of depression or anxiety at some point in our lives, and some of us will struggle with mental health challenges over a longer period of time. Regardless, making the choice to come to therapy is a courageous step on the path to wellness.
Where do I start?
When you first call or email us, the therapist will ask you some basic questions about what you are looking for. The therapist will make sure she is a good fit for you, in terms of her level of knowledge and expertise around the issues you are struggling with. If she is not, she will offer you a referral. If she is, she will offer you an appointment for an intake. Please feel free to ask any questions at this time.
The first session, or intake, is an hour-long appointment in which the therapist will ask you many questions, to your level of comfort, around your current struggles and your history. The therapist will create the most welcoming environment she can. Feel free to bring anything to eat or drink. We have tea and water at the office. You are also welcome to bring your baby or young toddler. Older children may listen or understand when you are talking, and it may make it uncomfortable for you to be open with the therapist.
At the end of the first appointment, you and the therapist will talk about a plan for therapy, which will include ideas about the approach or modality the therapist thinks will benefit you. You might set up regular appointments or you might just set up one more to take this week-by-week. Some people come to therapy weekly, others every-other-week, others even less frequently.
Throughout, please feel free to ask the therapist any and all questions that come up for you! Therapy is a collaborative process but you are in charge.
